Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
