Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
