RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
